During Arizona Car Week, The ClassicCars.com Journal paid a visit to the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa to check out the automotive goodness of Bonhams‘ The Scottsdale Auction.
While the top cars at other events may ebb and flow with the pulse of the hobby, Bonhams sticks with the tried and true: pre- and post-war classics and luxury and sport brands, with some interesting Europeans thrown in. As a result, the crowd and atmosphere are different.
You’ll always find good people with whom to chat, but we go for the cars. The January 25 auction promoted several high-dollar cars at the entrance: a 1967 Lamborghini Miura P400, 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing”, 1956 Ferrari 250 Europa GT, 1963 Porsche 356B Carrera 2 Sunroof Coupe, and 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Trans Am racer (ex-Alan Green Chevrolet/Jerry Grant).
Outside on the lawn, we found a nice assortment of older Rolls-Royce vehicles and Porsche 356 and 911 models. A 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition shared center stage with a 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach, surrounded by vehicles that are unusual on these shores: Nissan Skyline race cars from the 1980s.
